To my risk averse friends, I’ve got you covered as well. You know they love style, you know they could rock several different pieces from the collection, but you’re just not sure which. Her name is Lisa Zahiya and she is not only my business coach, but a stylish, inspirational and badass business owner, dancer and all around hype woman! I wish you all could know her and benefit from the incredible knowledge she shares with the world.
It was amazing for me to interview Lisa and learn how she designs her personal style, enlisted help from a professional stylist, and blocks out the “noise” from society about her body. Keep reading to see for yourself!
Describe your favorite outfit? Why is it your fav?
Black pleather leggings, a black tunic (I have long, short sleeves and sleeveless), and retro Air Jordans in Kentucky Blue. I live in New York, so I need outfits that are cute but that I can walk in and run up and down the subway stairs. I don't believe that comfort and cute have to be mutually exclusive. I love pleather (am I supposed to say faux leather) leggings because they are edgy. For accessories, I usually wear gold hoops or big earrings and layered gold necklaces. I am always wearing something meaningful to me, so I have necklaces that say "queen", "boss", and a bracelet that says "badass." I wear what I need to pump myself up!
Tell me about your biggest struggle getting dressed in the morning?
Being curvy, I have had two things come up: 1. to not feel like I am overflowing from everything that I am wearing. I am all for wearing whatever makes you feel good, but oftentimes what is in style/trendy makes me feel like my body is pouring out of my clothes. In opposition to that, I want to wear whatever I want without constant commentary on my body. While I can't prevent that (especially on the streets of New York), I can choose to ignore it.
How do you overcome it? Or do you?
I have spent a lot of time investing in pieces that I LOVE! I went to a stylist to help me figure out what I felt good in but felt comfortable and not binding or tight. And I got some cute headphones so I don't have to listen to people on the street. :)
What’s the most comfortable yet stylish piece in your closet?
Caftans! I have a bunch from traveling in Egypt and they feel like a nightgown but look so chic.
If there were one rule about fashion that you do or would follow, what would it be and why?
I don't really believe in rules, BUT I wouldn't wear white to a wedding, that just seems rude.
If there were one rule about fashion that you would throw out, what would it be and why?
Dress for your age. I'm 43 and wear whatever the heck I want.
What is the one thing in your closet that you could NOT live without? Why?
For my 40th birthday, I bought myself a pair of black 100mm Christian Louboutin pumps, I LOVE them and they are so beautiful.

I’m starting a series of interviews with some of my fashion favs! These women (and maybe men too), will share with you their fashion insights, tips and inspiration. Today, I’m talking with Lora LaPratt of Shopping Girl XOXO (link:www.shoppinggirlxoxo.xom), personal stylist…and old friend from high school! Her clients know Lora as a fun and exceptionally talented stylist, who helps them create outfits that fit their personality and lifestyle. Keep reading to learn more…
Describe your favorite outfit?
My favorite outfit is ALWAYS changing, which is why I absolutely love fashion! My day-to-day style changes along with my energy, how I'm feeling, and where I'll be going. I would say that my "go-to" look tends to be a great pair of skinny jeans with a fabulous over-sized top, a great funky pair of shoes and a statement necklace to pull it all together! This is what I feel the most "myself" in, the most confident, the most comfortable, and the most fashionable!
Tell me about your biggest struggle getting dressed in the morning?
My biggest struggle is finding an outfit that will take me from walking my dog, to client consultations, to the gym, to driving around Chicago for pulls, and everything in between! Owning my own personal styling business comes with a very hectic and constantly changing schedule. Especially as a stylist, it is important to always look very pulled together, but that doesn't always mean you have to be dressed to the 9s! Luckily athleisure wear is having a major moment right now! ;)
What’s the most comfortable yet stylish piece in your closet?
I am a major proponent of comfort! Over the years I've realized that it's pointless to buy anything that isn't comfortable, so luckily I feel like I have an entire wardrobe of comfortable and stylish pieces! I tell my clients all the time that comfort is one of the most important outfit makers, which looks different for everyone. For me, that typically means over-sized pieces for my tops! I just purchased an amazing dress from a local Chicago boutique which I am obsessed with! It's a navy midi length slip dress that has a fabulous chunky navy knit sweater with statement sleeves to wear on top! It's a very monochromatic, understatedly sexy look that I can not wait to wear!
If there were one rule about fashion that you do or would follow, what would it be and why?
THERE ARE NO RULES IN FASHION! :) However, there are "tips" that can really help you to show off your own body shape in the right ways! I think looking good in your wardrobe has more to do with fit, shape, and tailoring. As long as you're confident in what you're rocking that will be obvious to those around you!
What is the one thing in your closet that you could NOT live without? Why?
My grandmother's vintage gold belt. I wear it with EVERYTHING! It adds the perfect amount of glam to any look. It has stretch so it can easily be worn with jeans at your hips, over a dress at your natural waist, or even over a chunky layer to give a little definition! Plus, the fact that it belonged to my lovely grandmother makes it super special and nobody has anything like it.

I love hearing from you, my beautiful customers & friends, and finding out what some of your biggest fashion challenges are. It is has been such fun for me to help you find simple and chic solutions!
Today I am tackling the question: "I love your skirts, but what top do I wear with them?" I've been steady adding tops to my collection for years, including the Single Tuck Drape Top and the Trapezoid Tee! In addition to those, let me inspire you with a few outfits from my fav bloggers that are easy to put together with clothes you probably already have in your closet:
Grab your favorite graphic tee, my current fav is "Free Hugs, just ask", and add a stylish skirt, like our Fractured Linear Skirt - Rainbow for an easy casual look.
Real talk time friends. When 2021 rolled around and COVID vaccines became available, the prospect of doing markets again thrilled me to no end!
So the day before the market arrived, I went to pick out my outfit, like I always do the night before. I started putting on my Summation Skirt only to notice that it was too small…
]]>As some of you might know I’m an extra extrovert. Like, I love being around people, meeting new people, signing up for group activities solo just so that I can meet new people. It’s my jam!
So the anticipation of doing my first market after my vaccination fully kicked in was thrilling! I planned for it for weeks. Designing and redesigning my booth to meet covid protocols and thinking through how to keep myself and you all safe. I was stoked!
So the day before the market arrived, I went to pick out my outfit, like I always do the night before. I started putting on my Summation Skirt only to notice that it was too small…
Now, I’ve been running geekchicfashion for 7 years and this is the first time that one of my skirts was too small! I’ve always been a Large on bottom and to put that skirt on and it didn’t fit was a blow.
I’m not gonna call it the COVID15 because look, we were in a global pandemic, on lock down, homeschooling or virtual schooling our children and being in 24/7 contact with our spouses/children/roommates. I'm giving my body the grace it deserves to move through that stress and trauma however it will (and I hope you will do the same for your body).
But the surprise that my skirt didn’t fit still stung. I walk pretty regularly to manage stress and most of my other clothes still fit (those clothes being mostly joggers and tank tops…my stretchy comfy WFH uniform).
So I took a deep breath, felt the feeling of disappointment that 2020 had dealt to my body and life, released it and reminded myself that I'm a bad a$$ mamajama! I make these clothes and I'm gonna size up to an XL Prism Skirt to feel comfortable and continue looking like the fly Black Business Owner that I am!
The truth is, no one on the outside is going to see my size tag. All they’re going to see is how good I look and feel in these awesome skirts that I make. And you know what? That’s exactly why I make these skirts because it doesn’t matter what size you are, you can rock them and feel fabulous + comfy all while looking modern + stylish!
It was on my heart to share this with you because I’ve had a fair number of customers comment on how their bodies have changed over the last 18 months. Some about how they are waiting to buy new clothes until they lose weight, some that are disappointed with parts that are softer and rounder than they once were.
Here’s the thing. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. If the last year taught us anything, I hope it’s that. Live your life to the fullest in whatever shape it’s currently in. You are a beautiful goddess and your body is just a vessel to deliver all your awesomeness to the world! Accept it in all its incarnations and appreciate all that it’s gotten you through, especially lately.
]]>Who doesn’t love a Striped Skirt?! I’m personally in love with my Fractured Linear Skirt. It was one of the very first skirts I designed for geekchicfashion in the early days. But one of the biggest questions I get about this skirt is: “What do I wear with this skirt?” It’s a great question and I’m here to help with some inspiration.
]]>Who doesn’t love a Striped Skirt?! I’m personally in love with my Fractured Linear Skirt. It was one of the very first skirts I designed for geekchicfashion in the early days. And it’s not just ordinary horizontal stripes, it’s bisecting diagonal stripes that create a stunning visual effect. Can you tell I’m smitten?
But one of the biggest questions I get about this skirt is: “What do I wear with it?” It’s a great question and I’m here to help with some inspiration. Keep reading to see how you might style your striped skirt outfit today.
Pairing a striped skirt with a bold cardigan is one of the most classic and simple ways to style it. Most of us have at least one cardigan in our closet already and this is a great way to add it to the rotation.
Your favorite comfy tee in a rich color is another easy and stylish way piece to wear with your striped skirt. Add your favorite stylish sneakers like TOMS or Rothy’s and you’ve got a smart casual look perfect for Zoom calls, weeknight dinner al fresco or a weekend of errands.
Chambray is a perineal favorite when it comes to styling striped skirts. This type of top is trans seasonal depending on how you style it. A knot at the front adds a bit of fun. Tucked in with heels adds a business casual touch.
Mixing prints can feel daunting and sometimes tricky, but the results can be a really stunning look. Here you see how the top paired with stripes features a large pattern in the same colors as the skirt. It works really well and the pop of color in the jewelry also adds some flair. Pair it with stylish strappy sandals and you’re good to go for weekend brunch or date night.
Almost everyone has one of these or something similar in their closet. Secret: I don’t love button ups nor do I have one in my closet, lol! I stopped wearing traditional button ups ages ago because the buttons never stay closed over the girls. I prefer a stretch half button mandarin collar blouse, and I’m a happy camper. Whatever form your white blouse takes, it’s a lovely pairing with your striped skirt. Tuck it in, roll up the sleeves and grab your favorite pair of colored pumps and you have a timeless look that’s both professional and stylish.
Hope this helps and gives you lots of good outfit inspiration for your striped skirt! Oh, what's that? You don't have a striped skirt? Well, be sure to check out our Fractured Linear Skirt in the shop! It's a fan favorite!

]]>Get ready friends! This post isn't about fashion...its about life. Its something I have been ruminating on lately, and felt compelled to share with you today. Thank you for reading and joining me on this journey.
Friends, I have been leaning into my personal journey lately. It's not something I share about often because, let's be real, vulnerability is not one of my strong suits. I'm used to being perceived as successful, strong, "balancing it all".
But here's the really real: these past several months have been an awakening for me. I tend to burn the candle at both ends, and be highly influenced by "hustle culture", but it has been killing me. I felt perpetually tired trying to manage my family, my business, my own self. It wasn't working for me.
In January I attended a yoga retreat specifically for Women of Color and it was truly transformative. All these snippets I'd been hearing from people and seeing on social media (the power of rest, connecting with the ancestors wisdom and strength, healing from ancestral trauma, letting go of expectations/attachments) came into sharp focus as I learned to release what wasn't serving me and embrace my inner light. It may sound hokey (it still feels unnatural for me to express in those words because I have been conditioned to think of these soft words as weak, silly or innane), but I feel it in my bones.
Every day since that retreat has been a day of me chasing after the light I felt shining so brightly in those 2.5 days of complete rest and restoration, but tested at every single turn of my real life back home. Releasing what doesn't serve me is so much easier in the safety and sanctuary of a mountain top retreat. It's soo much harder when it means changing behaviors that are so ingrained in me they are like a reflex.
Its also so hard for me to rest...and I don't mean sleep, I mean sit still and just be. I have been conditioned by both society and the remnants of colonialism still present in my blood that rest is lazy and weak. That I must be busy all the time to prove that I am worthy, that I'm achieving, that I am successful. It's a hard mentality to break and requires daily affirmations and self talk when I start to feel guilty about sitting in my cozy chair with my cup of tea.
But you know what? I am worthy regardless of how much I achieve. I am worthy whether I'm resting or busy. I am worthy just because I am. I don't have to DO anything to prove it to myself or others. I am deserving of the kind of restorative rest that helps me come back to myself, that creates space for that creative spark to burn so I can realize new ideas.
Rest is powerful, friends. Let's release the idea that we have to be doing all the time, that we have to lean in or grind or hustle. Let's live this life with rest, passion, creativity and grace for ourselves and others. We deserve that, just because we are us.

The cold weather is upon us! I love it! I love cozy fall outfits, but I also know that you, like me, might struggle with how to wear your favorite skirts in the blustering temps.
Well, today's your lucky day because I'm going to share 4 of my fav outfit inspirations for cool temps. Don't pack those skirts away yet, read on for winter fashion inspiration...
My first favorite is the black tights and black shoes combo (and if you've been following me you know I love a black bootie!!). Pair it with a black turtleneck or fitted sweater and a bold print skirt for put together...and warm...winter style! My Summation Skirt is perfect for this outfit, too!
Another, perfectly cozy, winter outfit involves a comfy bulky sweater paired with a fitted pencil skirt. This outfit showcases texture (think cable knit sweater), and form with the fitted skirt. The juxtaposition of loose and fitted creates a stylish yet comfortable aesthetic. Try it with our Fractured Color Block Skirt!
I've never worn long dusters because I'm short (5'3" on a good day), but this outfit caught my eye! I would try it with a longer boyfriend cardigan, but the sleek silhouette of a pencil skirt and casual comfort of your favorite fitted tee make this a warm and fashionable outfit for winter. Try it with our Diagonal Skirt for a pop of color!
Finally, a long sleeve peplum top (lightweight sweater or jersey top) are the perfect figure flattering cool weather outfit. The peplum floats right over your middle section creating an hourglass figure...who doesn't love that?! You could take this a level higher by pairing it with the first outfit inspiration of black tights and booties to keep your legs warm in cool weather. Our Peplum Top and Fractured Linear Skirt are my favorites in the fall and winter!!
I hope you found some outfit inspiration that you can incorporate into your own wardrobe this winter! Keep those skirts going throughout the seasons while staying warm and stylish, ladies!

Hi Friends, thanks for visiting my website and blog!
Since this is the blog post to launch all blog posts, I wanted to share with you how it all started several years ago.
I was out shopping for a casual dress or skirt outfit for summer and I couldn’t find anything that flattered my figure!
The dresses/tops were either too "young/teen" looking or too matronly, neither of which flattered this gorgeous hourglass figure of mine. I felt frustrated and disappointed in the fashion industry.
And that’s when it hit me.
I could make skirts for all my beautiful friends and myself! We just wanted modern, comfortable and versatile wardrobe staples that made us look and feel beautiful! Not to mention they would be ethical and handmade...by me!
So in that moment, out of necessity, I started sewing and plotting my own fashion empire that would cater to women like me:
Women who want modern comfortable pieces that transition from work to play. Women who want to look chic and feel beautiful…with a subtle touch of geek!
It’s my mission to create clothing that makes women look and feel amazing. I want women to embrace their shape and personal fashion sense with pieces that fit comfortably & beautifully!
So what’s your story? I’d love to know more about YOU! Drop a note in the comments to share. Talk soon!
