Part-time Sewing Machine Operator
Deadline: June 15, 2022

This is W2 position for 12 hrs/wk with up to 20 hrs/wk during peak seasons.

geekchicfashion is a modern, chic + comfortable independent women's clothing label, handmade in Pittsboro NC. We make ready-to-wear women’s apparel from stretch fabric. All work is produced in our studio in downtown Pittsboro and sold through our website as well as in-person at local pop-up markets.

I envision a Sewing Machine Operator who will work alongside our team in the studio producing high quality garments efficiently and as designed. Qualified candidates will be experienced in using a serger, cover stitch machine and sewing machine, excited about the business of fashion, and be a strong believer in body acceptance.

You will be joining a team that is driven to create modern and stylish clothes for women of many sizes to help them look and feel good. This studio is a collaborative work environment and you should be comfortable sharing your own ideas as well as incorporating feedback into your work and process. We will collaborate to balance your availability with project deadlines.

You are ready to (job responsibilities):
  • Operate and maintain sewing machines and related parts, including pattern plates, needles, presser feet, automatic cutting tools and blades
  • Read and interpret work orders and adjust machines and materials to match, including selecting fabric, thread and needles, mounting necessary attachments and double-checking settings before beginning a large run
  • Inspect and repair finished products as needed and make machine adjustments to compensate for errors or quality issues
  • Record accurately the materials used, maintenance performed and number of pieces completed during each shift, keeping each of these metrics within target ranges
  • Troubleshoot basic machinery problems and request service or repairs as needed
  • Meet or exceed consistent daily and weekly output and quality goals
  • Ready to balance part-time work with your other responsibilities
  • Available to travel to Pittsboro, NC for work daily
  • Highly detail oriented, organized and optimistic. You can handle multiple projects and prioritize based on business needs.
  • Able to work effectively independently
You have (job requirements):
  • Experience with sewing machinery including cutting and constructing/sewing with knit fabric for production quantities.
  • Excellent knowledge of various types of sewing machines with all stitching solutions.
  • Proficiency in sewing with knit fabric construction, including experience with pattern creation/revisions.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to improve upon ease and efficiency of sewing construction while maintaining design intentions.
  • Keen understanding of the Imperial measurement system down to and 1/8 of an inch.
  • Computer experience with Google Sheets, MS Office + Excel.
  • Must be at least 18 years old to work with sewing machines
  • Able to stand throughout shift
  • Good physical (hand/eye) coordination
  • Physically able to carry bolts of fabric (10-20lbs)
